Hormone Toxicity

What Does It Mean?

Hormone toxicity occurs when excess hormones accumulate in the body, leading to inflammation, endocrine disruption, metabolic dysfunction, and systemic imbalances. This may be caused by poor hormone metabolism, impaired detoxification, excessive exogenous hormone exposure, or environmental endocrine disruptors.

Root Causes & Imbalances

  • Elevated estrogen, testosterone, or dihydrotestosterone (DHT) leading to metabolic and reproductive dysfunction
  • Reduced liver detoxification and hormone clearance, leading to hormone buildup
  • Exposure to endocrine disruptors (plastics, pesticides, synthetic hormones) affecting hormone metabolism
  • Chronic stress and adrenal dysfunction, disrupting hormone regulation
  • Gut dysbiosis and inflammation, impairing hormone metabolism and clearance
  • Nutrient deficiencies (B vitamins, glutathione, magnesium) reducing detoxification capacity

Signs & Symptoms

Patients with hormone toxicity may present with:

  • Weight gain and fluid retention due to estrogen or cortisol excess
  • Acne, oily skin, and hair thinning from excess androgens (testosterone, DHT)
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or depression due to hormone dysregulation
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or heavy bleeding in females
  • Low libido and erectile dysfunction in males
  • Gynecomastia and breast tenderness (increased estrogen effects in men)
  • Fatigue and brain fog from metabolic and endocrine dysfunction

Lab Test Findings

Lab Test Expected Changes Optimal Range
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT, Male) Increased 50.00-65.00 ng/dL
Estradiol (E2, Male) Increased 24.00-39.00 pg/mL
Estrogen (Female) Increased or Decreased 80-250 pg/mL
Estrone Increased 0-125 pg/mL
Free Testosterone (Female, Calculated) Increased or Decreased 0.8-1.2 pg/mL
HDL Cholesterol Decreased 55.00-93.00 mg/dL
Hemoglobin (Female) Decreased 13.50-14.50 g/dL
Progesterone (Male) Decreased 0.20-0.90 ng/dL
RBC (Male) Decreased 4.20-4.90Cells/µL
Testosterone (Total, Male) Increased or Decreased 700.00-1100.00 ng/dL
