What Does It Mean?

Depression is a chronic mental health condition that affects mood, cognition, and overall well-being. It is associated with neuroinflammation, neurotransmitter imbalances, oxidative stress, and gut dysfunction. Functional Medicine views depression as a symptom of deeper physiological imbalances rather than a standalone disease.

How Did We Get There?

Root Causes:

  • Neurotransmitter Dysregulation – Deficiencies in serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine contribute to mood instability.
  • Chronic Inflammation – Elevated inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) can impair brain function.
  • HPA Axis Dysfunction – Cortisol imbalances can lead to adrenal fatigue and mood disturbances.
  • Gut Dysbiosis – The gut-brain axis plays a crucial role in mental health, and an imbalanced microbiome can lead to depression.
  • Nutrient Deficiencies – Low levels of B vitamins, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids are linked to depressive symptoms.
  • Heavy Metal & Toxin Accumulation – Elevated levels of metals such as aluminum and lead may contribute to neurological dysfunction.

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Persistent sadness or low mood
  • Fatigue and low energy levels
  • Cognitive fog and poor concentration
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia or hypersomnia)
  • Appetite changes (increase or decrease)
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, or worthlessness

How Do We Treat It?

A root-cause approach aims to address inflammation, neurotransmitter balance, and nutrient deficiencies through targeted supplementation and lifestyle interventions.
