Ulcer
What Does It Mean?
An ulcer is an open sore that develops on the lining of the stomach, intestines, or esophagus due to mucosal erosion. These sores can be caused by excessive stomach acid, bacterial infections (Helicobacter pylori), chronic inflammation, or weakened gut barrier function. Left untreated, ulcers can lead to digestive distress, poor nutrient absorption, and systemic inflammation.
How Did We Get There?
Root Causes
• H. pylori Infection – Disrupts the protective mucosal lining and leads to inflammation.
• Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis – Imbalances in gut flora contribute to inflammation and poor digestion.
• Hypochlorhydria or Hyperchlorhydria – Too little or too much stomach acid can damage the mucosal lining.
• Nutrient Deficiencies – Lack of zinc, vitamin C, and glutathione impairs gut healing and immune function.
• Chronic Inflammation & Oxidative Stress – Damages the mucosal barrier and increases ulcer risk.
• NSAID or Alcohol Overuse – Irritates the stomach lining and weakens the protective mucus layer.
• Post-Vaccine Immune Dysregulation – Alters gut-immune interactions, increasing gut lining irritation.
Signs & Symptoms
• Burning stomach pain, often between meals or at night
• Nausea, bloating, or early satiety
• Indigestion, reflux, or burping
• Dark, tarry stools (sign of GI bleeding)
• Fatigue and nutrient deficiencies
• Increased sensitivity to acidic or spicy foods
Diagnostic Criteria
Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms.
How Do We Treat It?
Functional Medicine Approach
The treatment approach focuses on healing the gut lining, reducing inflammation, and supporting microbial balance.

• Anti-Inflammatory Diet – Avoid processed foods, alcohol, and NSAIDs that exacerbate ulcers.
• Probiotic & Prebiotic Intake – Support beneficial gut bacteria to enhance mucosal defense.
• Stress Management – Reduce stress through breathwork, meditation, and lifestyle changes to prevent excess acid production.
