What Does It Mean?
Ulcers are open sores in the lining of the stomach, intestines, or esophagus caused by mucosal erosion. These ulcers develop due to chronic inflammation, bacterial infections (Helicobacter pylori), excessive acid production, or impaired gut barrier function. Left untreated, ulcers can lead to digestive distress, nutrient malabsorption, and systemic inflammation.
How Did We Get There?
Root Causes
• H. pylori Infection – Disrupts the protective mucosal lining, leading to ulcer formation.
• Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis – Imbalances in gut flora contribute to chronic inflammation and delayed healing.
• Hypochlorhydria or Hyperchlorhydria – Alterations in stomach acid levels impact digestion and mucosal integrity.
• Nutrient Deficiencies – Lack of key nutrients such as zinc, vitamin C, and glutathione weakens the gut lining.
• Chronic Inflammation & Oxidative Stress – Damages the mucosal barrier, increasing ulcer susceptibility.
• NSAID or Alcohol Overuse – Irritates the stomach lining, reducing protective mucus production.
• Post-Vaccine Immune Dysregulation – Alters gut immune interactions, leading to increased inflammation.
Signs & Symptoms
• Burning stomach pain, especially between meals or at night
• Nausea, bloating, or early satiety
• Indigestion, reflux, or belching
• Dark, tarry stools (indicating GI bleeding)
• Fatigue and nutrient deficiencies
• Increased food sensitivities due to impaired gut barrier function
Diagnostic Criteria
Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms.
How Do We Treat It?
Functional Medicine Approach
The treatment approach focuses on healing the gut lining, reducing inflammation, and supporting microbial balance.
